The causes of epilepsy are very complex and sometimes hard to identify.
In some cases, they can be identified depending on the age at which the seizures began and what type of seizure had occurred.
But in most cases the cause of it is yet unknown, however, it could be related to brain injury, infections such as meningitis, insults causing lack of oxygen to the brain or a tumor.
It could also be a genetic tendency that may be inherited. Current studies show that epilepsy at a very young age is likely to occur from family genetics but can also be developed at any age. Naturally, some people are more prone than others and it could be years between the damage transpiring and the seizure to emerge.
